Supervisors and Managers Responsibilities Essay -- Organizational Stru
Many organizations and establishments have philosophies in how an organization is to be functioning and which positions are necessary to execute the plan. One of the crucial positions that make the establishment function is that of a Supervisor. The term supervisor is a word with Latin roots which means ââ¬Å"to look over,â⬠however, a supervisor is viewed as a person who is an immediate overseer to an employee at a workplace. The supervisor is the person an employee would directly report to for any work related situation. A supervisor plays an essential part of the management team that gives an organization purpose and leadership by being responsible for employeesââ¬â¢ progress and productivity (Bittel & Newstrom, 1992). Supervisors and Managers share some similarities in that they oversee people however they have clear differences that can distinguish one from the other. Managers are usually occupied in four areas which include: planning, organizing, leading and coordinating activities for the organization. Like supervisors, managers give an organization purpose and leadership however their responsibilities are traditionally greater than that of a supervisor by executing responsibilities such as identifying goals, objectives, methods, resources needed to carry out methods, responsibilities and dates for completion of tasks (McNamara, 2010). Managers are considered to be the organizational group above supervisors and have supervisors carry out their mandates and have the goals reach out to the staff through the supervisors. Supervisors carry out many activities in order to keep their portion of the organization functioning. Supervisors are responsible for their direct reports' progress and productivity in the organization. Sup... ...s the chance for biased pay scales. A second use for a job description is to serve as a reference when the employee is due for a performance appraisal (McNamara, 2010). A rater can reference the job description if an employee feels that he or she did not think that a certain task that was asked of them was part of the job description. An employee should be familiar with the job description as well as the performance appraisal procedures before being evaluated. A rater can always reference the job description for the basis of a review and an employee can reference the job description if they feel as though they are being rated unfairly (McNamara, 2010). Both are vital as the job description allows for the employee to understand what is expected of him or her and the performance review states whether the worker fulfilled those expectations asked of him or her.

INTRODUCTION The motto of the following report is to identify and highlight the connection between the management principles, functions and organizational structure. Every organization has the application of these three factors as better outcomes are achieved when they are linked together and implied. The management principles affect the management functions which have a great influence on the organizational str ucture. This report is using ââ¬ËMARKS AND SPENCERââ¬â¢ as an example to show how the three affect on each other. Management is the process of getting activities completed efficiently and effectively through other people. It includes various processes and steps which will be further discussed in the following report. There are 14 management principles as stated by Henry Fayol ( Boddy, 2005 ). Many of them are linked with the functions of management which are, Planning, Organizing, Controlling and Leading. The report is to show the relations between the three factors of the business and how are they implied. FUNCTION OF PLANNING LINKING WITH MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES AND ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE Planning is an essential component of management function to carry out the smooth operation of a business. It contains the property of identifying the obejectives of a business by the management team. When the plans are being made, the changes are implied immediately or according to a time sp an as required according to the current status of the business. For a successful planning, forecasting is very necessary for the management as it helps them to be prepared for the worst case scenarios and to earn more revenues as well. This very function management can be linked with one of the management principles as stated by a French business analyst named Henry Fayol, which is Unity of Direction. The author defines the principle as the combination of group of people who work together to achieve the same organizational goals and performs the activities in a definite synchronized system to achieve them with maximum efficiency. For example, if we look into a press release by Marks and Spencer during their AGM in 11th July 2011, it is seen that the Chairman and CEO of the company, Mr. Luc Vandevelde announced that the company is going to bring a significant change in their planning and thus a change in their organizational structure as well. He also announced the new planning strateg ies which will be carried out to maximize profits for the company. The plans were implied from 29th March 2001. It included the selling of their own brands only but not any other external brands anymore. This is done to reattain the fame regarding the quality of own products as customers experienced no extra facilities buying external brands from Marks and Spencer and neither the external brand companies nor Marks and Spencer could gain any outstanding revenue selling exrternal brand products. To make this come into action, the company decided to return to their own suppliers who had been supplying the very own products dedicated for the selling purpose of Marks and Spencer only. This would result to the attainment of the former business relations and strong future commitments and the uphill formation of M & S business achievements. The second plan was to close down the subsidiary companies which were making losses rather than profits M & S. For example, Brooks Brothers and Kings Supe r Market in USA were sold off as they were loss-making companies and were affecting the gross profit margin of M & S. The company also decided to close down the stores in Central Europe as it was not making profits. These plans were made and implied after research being made by the superiors of the company and the structures had been re-organized.This is where the organizational structure comes into action when the company sort out and design the strategies to overcome the difficulties and perform smooth business actions. FUNCTION OF ORGANISING LINKING WITH MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLE AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE Organizing is the process of combining human, physical and financial resources to achieve organizational goals. It is important to carefully dedicate the resources to maximize profits since resources are always limited. This is synchronized with the ââ¬ËDivision of Laborââ¬â¢ management principle by Henry Fayol. This factor of management principle is described by the author t hat the every duty of an organization is spread evenly among the employees to ease out the process of output. If we draw an example regarding M & S, its seen that the duties are segregated between the employees. The organization is structured from the Chairman to Customer Service Assistant, where, they have different tasks to complete. This results to finish and achieve goals within less time and with more efficiency as there is a saying that,ââ¬â¢ A load of ten is a burden of oneââ¬â¢.Each of the employee are asked to perform their own definite task which then becomes a positive outcome when made total. FUNCTION OF LEADING LINKING WITH MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE Management needs to exercise the function of leading in order for the organization to achieve their goals. It is an essential part of the management as it helps the management to direct employees to focus on ââ¬Ëthe big pictureââ¬â¢. Normally management focuses on increasing productivity to improve cost efficiency. To improve productivity employees need direction and motivation. The direction and motivation are usually received from superiors. This can be linked with the management principle of ââ¬ËAuthority and Responsibilityââ¬â¢ which means to have the power to order the sub-ordinates and direct them to achieving goals. For example, M & S have the supervisors who lead the Retail Operatives to fulfill the targets which are set by the Managers to the supervisors. It follows a chain of command which has the ultimate goal of maximizing profit. The chain of command starts from the highest level of authority like the Chairman and ends to the Retail Operativesââ¬â¢ tasks.FUNCTION OF CONTROLLING LINKING WITH MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES AND ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE Management must use the function of Control to maximize employee performance and stabilize the working environment. There had been always a controversy where it is widely believed that Controlling is a negati ve term because the employees regard it to be a restriction. But at the very conclusion, it helps to maintain a strict guideline which the employees must follow to avoid chaos. ââ¬Å"Managers expect people in an organization to change their behavior in response to controlâ⬠(Erven, 1994).This can be inter related with management principle of ââ¬Å"Disciplineâ⬠, which is clearly stated by Fayol that there should be certain rules which are to be followed must by the employees. When it is looked into M & S, it is apparent that the company applies a number of rules which must be obliged by the employees to create a better working environment and prevent any internal hassles within the company. Therefore, the organization has been structured in such format where certain rules are set in purpose to keep the working environment healthy and prosperous in respect to business aspects. CONCLUSIONFrom the report it is apparent that Management Functions are greatly influenced by the Management Principles based on which the organization is being structured. The achievement of organizational goals are highly affected due to the implication of these three management factors. It is fair to conclude that, for an organization to make profit and carry out its operation in long run, the application of these management factors are inevitable. REFERENCE LIST 1. Health Care: History, Developments, and Problems Essay
Health care is necessary in every individualââ¬â¢s well-being. A lot of individuals require health care in one way or another, for, unfortunately, illnessââ¬ânot to mention old age and the disadvantages that come along with itââ¬âare inevitable. While it may seem rather frivolous to many, it is necessary to understand the various aspects of health care, as well as the related issues to it, for this will help pinpoint necessary information in the advent one needs to undergo hospitalization and long-term care. Understanding Nonprofit and For-profit Hospitals The difference between nonprofit and for-profit hospitals is actually historical. Nonprofit hospitals are were originally found by religious organizations. In a sense, these hospitals are those which aim to help people out of kindness. It is stated that nonprofit hospitals tend to be more dedicated in caring for their patients because their motivation is to help people without expecting anything in return. However, one important issue regarding nonprofit hospitals is that their facilities and equipment may not be updated, for they are getting no returns for their service (Cutler, 2000). On the other hand, for-profit hospitals are those hospitals which eventually emerged from nonprofit hospitals due to one important factor: profit. for-profit hospitals earn money and can afford to develop their health care programs, as well as provide better equipment and facilities in order to provide better service. Apart from this, for-profit hospitals can fund health education for its employees as well as fund medical research. However, it is stated that for-profit hospitals might skimp on health care. Since for-profit hospitals have ââ¬Å"shareholders who demand the highest possible returnsâ⬠(Cutler, 2000, p. ), there is a tendency for the hospital to be stingy with its services in order to provide the business demands of its shareholders (Cutler, 2000). Trends in the Hospital Sector As the service of health care improved over time, a various amount of changes occurred. Currently, there are several trends in the hospital sector which are said to aim for organization improvement and better service. One of the most prominent trends in the hospital sectors is the consolidation of hospitals. This merging is done in order to ensure that some of the small hospitals are able to survive. Apart from this, merging is a way to improve health care quality, as well as strengthen their financial and organizational capacity. This will also end the competition between hospitals whenever there are scarcities in resources (Laschober, Wiley & Gelband, 1995). Another trend in the hospital sector is the increasing number of doctors who specialize in various fields of practice. This only means that hospitals have decided to focus on creating a more efficient means of treatment for patients through hiring a wide range of specialists who can provide the appropriate health care needed by a patient. Laschober, Wiley & Gelband, 1995). And lastly, the hospital sector has largely improved in its patient care through removing the hotel function of hospitals. Gone are the days that patients need to spend days lying on a hospital bed; there is now a significant increase in the volume of outpatient care and the trend is that patients who undergo same-day surgeries and are allowed to go home on the same day (Laschober, Wiley & Gelband, 1995). Long-Term Care in Hospitals and Nursing Homes Nursing homes are residential settings for individuals who need assistance; commonly, individuals who are admitted into nursing homes are there due to poverty, advanced age, living alone, impaired mental status, loss of ability to take care of oneself, heart disease, and dementia. Primarily, the criterion is that the individual must be sick enough to need nursing care, but not sick enough that he or she requires hospitalization. Read more: Problems of Old Age Essay The long-term care plan in nursing home involves assisted-living facilities (focuses on providing all of the basic needs), special care units (different units created to address different needs of specific residents in the nursing home) and resident-centered care (addresses the need of patients for increased quality of life) (Miller, 2009). On the other hand, long-term care in hospitals is very different; usually, patients require an array of services which are dependent on the their changing condition. This is referred to as integrated care, wherein every single condition is addressed differently. Also, unlike a nursing home, patients are not required to stay in for a long time in hospitals; they may eventually go to their homes under the care and supervision of home health agencies (Singh, 2010), whereas those who are admitted in nursing homes are predetermined to stay there. Also, the patient can move into different types of long-term care, depending on his or her conditionââ¬âthis can also mean that the services provided may either be long-term or non-long term (Singh, 2010). Long-term Care in the United States As seen in the aforementioned discussion, long-term health care is undoubtedly important in ensuring that patients are well-cared for during times of illnesses and weakness. However, currently, the state of the long-term care policy in the United States is rather problematic. For example, long-term care benefits cannot be collected for the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) program is still not running. The earliest predicted date when individuals can claim their benefits will be in 2017, which is a problem especially if some individuals need benefits to support their hospitalization and so on. Apart from this, this health care policy concerning CLASS does not cover individuals who are not working, such as those who cannot work or retired (Andrews, 2010). Summary As seen in the aforementioned discussion, health care has come a long way from being provided by religious institutions. It has developed systems for the benefit of its patients, as well as new policies. However, it could be seen in the current situation of long-term care in the United States, there needs to be more improvement in order to attain the appropriate policies to serve the people. In a nutshell, although long-term care has been developed appropriately, whether it is on a hospital or in a nursing home, long-term care policies which have been currently implemented, such as CLASS, will prohibit people from receiving the appropriate health care. Even if such program will provide more benefits for individuals compared to the private long-term care insurances, it, nevertheless, excludes other individuals from being properly cared for because it is not encompassing.

Conflict resolution Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Conflict resolution - Case Study Example The second case of the conflict may be difficult to resolve owing to the fact that a change in cultural norm is a gradual affair and would in cooperate systematic agreement and understanding of each otherââ¬â¢s situation to resolve the conflict (Hansen, 2008). In an attempt to analyses and understand the nature of conflict and conflict resolution, this paper will draw from a conflict whereby an old fashioned, old school white woman from the southern states of US and in her late 70ââ¬â¢s arrives as a new patient in a facility where a young black CAN-T (Nurse) works. As a result of the socio-cultural way of life in the southern states of America, black members of the society are called ââ¬Å"colored." The new patient persistently calls the CAN-T colored despite pleas from the nurse to be referred to by the title or by name. The CAN-T feels offended by the persistence in the naming and perceives this to be racially instigated thus reports the matter to the director of nursing in the facility. Nevertheless, the new patient does not feel offensive and affirms that she has a right and freedom to speak. The situation thus results in a conflict as much as the new patient does not want a change of the nurse, as the CAN-T has been so good in de livering her services. Descriptively, this nature of a conflict falls under the category of a health worker to patient conflict. This kind of a conflict can in most cases interfere with the quality of services the nurse would offer the patient, thus instead of providing a primary nursing services, the nurse may only manage the conditions and procedures of the patient and not the patient (Nan, 2011). The conflict under study has more implications for the nurse as the patient feels she is right to call the nurse in the way she deems right. Psychologically, the conflict has a tremendous impact on the nurse in terms of stress, anger and sadness. The

Health Maintenance Organizations Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Health Maintenance Organizations - Assignment Example The assignment "Health Maintenance Organizations" overviews the Health Maintenance Organization and discusses how it differs from the Preferred Provider Organization. A Preferred Provider Organization combines managed care with the traditional insurance. This plan, unlike HMO, allows for the patients to go outside their health care plan. It also utilizes a network of health care specialists who are paid on a fee-for-service basis rather than prepaid. The insurer pays a small amount on doctorââ¬â¢s visit while the insurance pays the rest of the fee. HMOs only cover their patients if they visit HMO designated doctors while PPO patients have freedom of movement with partial payment covered by insurance while they pay the rest. PPOs also have a wider network of physicians and specialists than HMO as most of these physicians prefer it due to the prompt fee for service pay. On the other hand, HMOs are much cheaper than PPOs and their plans are rated more favorably by their subscribers e ven though nowadays PPO has more people. BlueCross Blue shield Michiganââ¬â¢s mission is to improve the healthcare of residents of Michigan and the vision is to make significant contributions to the health care in that state. The mission of Zinn Insurance Agency is to meet the health needs of individuals and seniors. Its vision is to continue growing the needs of the family.
